If you are under 25, you think the word avatar means your picture on you a social networking site. If you are under 15, you think that it is some tall alien dudes on an alien planet. Boy and girls, I don’t know how to break this to you, but it is none of the above.
Avatar is a Sanskrit word that refers to God almighty having been born into a human body. These incarnations tend to be rare; they believed to come along only at humankind’s darkest hour. While this concept is most commonly associated with the Hindu faith and the Vedic tradition at large, you will see this popping up in other faiths. According to this definition, for instance, Jesus Christ was an avatar. The line between his human and divine self is often blurred.
Even though, many Buddhists may raise issue with this, the fact is that the Hindus predicted the coming of the Buddha as he is described as one of the 10 manifestations of the divine in their tradition.
