Buddhist proverbs can be on the cryptic side, but this nature of short spiritual teachings tends to bop its head up all over the spectrum regardless origin. I used to wonder what the heck was up while reading one of these proverbs or psalm in the Bible. It was bugging me for a long time. I didn’t understand why they couldn’t just come out and say what they meant as opposed to giving seekers a virtual riddle. Here are some of the reasons why a teacher of spiritual truths might choose to go the cryptic route.
Firstly, I had to admit there was a possibility, I had to admit, that they were just covering their butts, because they had no idea what they were talking about. While I am normally careful writing off entire schools of thought at the wave of the hand, I got to say I have seen some very popular teachers (I won’t name any names here) who reeked of b.s. They would not answer any questions directly leaving their followers in complete confusion and – coincidentally, I don’t think so – wanting more. People would line up to see them and the donations would roll in.
However, I decided to look at this issue with the assumption that maybe there was a reason for the phenomenon. Perhaps, the sayings and proverbs do contain real truths and their cryptic nature was a “delivery method” so to speak.
Courtesy of StandUpPhilosopher.org - Insight Through Introspection See, modern society is used to receiving education where the student is given the answers directly. The problem with this is that people will usually fall into the trap of thinking that there is no more to learn about the issue at hand. This is a huge mistake, especially when it comes to abstract subjects such as philosophy and spirituality. Some might read a passage of a scripture and think that their understanding as to its meaning of it is all they ever going to get out of it. In my experience, a single sentence can have a way of morphing and evolving in one’s mind and spirit; and, it can keep teaching one for the rest of that person’s life.
By being cryptic and seemingly vague, proverbs, single line quotes etc. will force the seeker to give it some serious thought and to ponder its deeper meaning. The information is there and now it’s up to the individual to turn it into something the he or she can use. Unfortunately, for the average person telling charlatans apart from the real deal may be difficult if not impossible. But that’s good too in a way. It keeps one’s guard up and forces them to do their own thinking and verify what’s being said through their own experience. As a matter of fact, I believe the sign of a true teacher of spirituality if he or she says right at the get-go: “Do not believe a word I say. Prove me right or wrong.”
